Wes Anderson’s cult classic 1998 film Rushmore follows Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), an ambitious and eccentric tenth grader at Rushmore Academy. Max is editor of the school newspaper and yearbook, president of multiple clubs, captain of the fencing and debate teams, founder of the Double-Team Dodgeball Society, and director of the Max Fischer Players, for whom he writes and stages plays tackling themes like police corruption, inner-city violence, and war. Despite his outsized résumé—and plans to apply early to Oxford, with Harvard as his “safety”—Max is one of the school’s worst students and finds himself on sudden-death academic probation. The film’s soundtrack draws heavily from British Invasion hits of the 1960s, a choice Anderson made to reveal Max’s youthful, chaotic inner life beneath his cultivated exterior. Music supervisor Randy Poster notes that Anderson had been discussing the music years before filming, even choreographing certain scenes around songs selected in advance, weaving the soundtrack directly into the film’s rhythm and tone.
