One of several Strata-East projects led by bassist, composer, and arranger Bill Lee—father of filmmaker Spike Lee—A Spirit Speaks is the sole album by The Descendants of Mike and Phoebe, a group formed with Lee’s siblings Clif Lee, Grace Lee Mims, and Consuela Lee Moorhead in tribute to their enslaved ancestors. Blending jazz, gospel, soul, blues, and other influences, the album has become one of the label’s most coveted releases.

This edition is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI, with audio cut directly from the original analog tapes and remastered by Kevin Gray. It comes housed in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket featuring newly commissioned liner notes by Harmony Holiday and never-before-seen photos.
