Subtitled “DEEP, HEAVY AND BEAUTIFUL JAZZ FROM JAPAN 1968-1984”, WaJazz: Japanese Jazz Spectacle Vol. 1 is a 14-track double vinyl compilation curated by renowned jazz expert Yusuke Ogawa, featuring his extensive liner notes. Pressed on 180g vinyl with a gatefold sleeve, this release is a collaboration between Universounds, HMV Record Shop, and 180g, showcasing an essential selection of Japanese jazz from blazing hard bop and free jazz to introspective saxophone solos and expansive big band arrangements. Featured artists include Jiro Inagaki, Minoru Muraoka, Hiroshi Suzuki, Hozan Yamamoto, Count Buffalo, Takeshi Inomata, and more.

Japanese jazz, widely celebrated by music lovers worldwide, has gained renewed attention locally under the term WaJazz—“Wa” referring both to Japan and the Shōwa period (1926–1989). Since the early 2000s, listeners have increasingly embraced jazz with deeper understanding, exploring its roots and distinctive Japanese identity. As Ogawa notes, while WaJazz encompasses a variety of styles, there is a unique Japanese sensibility—whether in melody, rhythm, or a subtler, ineffable quality—that flows through the performances. This collection offers listeners a glimpse into those charms across fourteen essential tracks.

Yusuke Ogawa has run Tokyo’s Universounds store since 2001, specializing in jazz and rare collector records. He is also a reissue supervisor, label manager, DJ, and music writer, with credits on over 250 reissues and compilations, including the acclaimed Deep Jazz Reality and Project Re:Vinyl series. Ogawa is co-author of the Wa-Jazz Disc Guide and Independent Black Jazz of America.
