In the spring of 1968, a cargo ship carrying a valuable shipment of musical instruments vanished from the radar while en route from Baltimore to the EMSE Exhibition in Rio de Janeiro. Months later, the vessel astonishingly reappeared—not at a port, but stranded in the fields of Cachaco on São Nicolau, Cabo Verde, some eight kilometers from the coast. The instruments were swiftly distributed to locations with electricity, primarily schools, sparking a wave of musical innovation. Local genres like Morna and Coladera evolved with new textures, while the vibrant, danceable Funaná rhythm flourished, marking a pivotal moment in the modernization of Cabo Verdean music.
