The 13-track MAHAL marks the seventh studio album from Chaz Bear under the Toro y Moi moniker. To celebrate the announcement, Toro y Moi has shared two singles from the forthcoming record: “Postman” b/w “Magazine,” each accompanied by a visual. Directed by Kid. Studio, the “Postman” video features Toro and friends cruising through the colorful streets of San Francisco in his Filipino jeepney, which also appears on the album cover. “Magazine,” directed by Arlington Lowell, stars Toro and Salami Rose Joe Louis—who provides vocals on the track—dressed vibrantly in a photo studio, intercut with playful graphics and dynamic visual edits.
MAHAL follows Toro’s highly acclaimed 2019 album Outer Peace, described by Pitchfork as “one of his best albums in years,” and his Grammy-nominated 2020 collaboration with Flume, “The Difference,” which was featured in a global Apple AirPods campaign. These new releases also mark Toro y Moi’s first project since signing with Dead Oceans, an independent label established in 2007 that houses artists such as Japanese Breakfast, Khruangbin, Phoebe Bridgers, Bright Eyes, Mitski, and Slowdive.
Toro y Moi is the 12+-year project of South Carolina–born, Bay Area–based Chaz Bear. Emerging in the wake of the 2008 global economic collapse, he became a figurehead of the chillwave movement, a shimmering, dreamy sound that continues to influence musicians today. Over the past decade, Bear’s work—spanning nine albums (six studio releases as Toro y Moi, plus a live album, compilation, and mixtape) on Carpark Records—has pushed beyond chillwave into psych-rock, deep house, UK hip-hop, R&B, and more, all while retaining his signature bright and shimmering sonic fingerprint. In addition to his music, Bear has built a career in graphic design, collaborating with brands like Nike, Dublab, and Vans, and as a songwriter and producer, he has worked with artists including Tyler, The Creator, Flume, Travis Scott, HAIM, and Caroline Polachek.
