Over the three and a half years since the release of Lost in the Dream, The War on Drugs’ frontman Adam Granduciel led his Philadelphia-based sextet through an intense period of creation, spending countless hours in studios in New York and Los Angeles writing, recording, editing, and refining their music. Working alongside engineer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Weezer), Granduciel challenged what it means to craft a fully realized album in today’s musical landscape. He continuously called on his bandmates—bassist Dave Hartley, keyboardist Robbie Bennett, drummer Charlie Hall, and multi-instrumentalists Anthony LaMarca and Jon Natchez—resulting in a truly collaborative “band record” defined by coordination, confidence, and shared vision. Through years of relocation, revisiting and reexamining endless hours of recordings, and embracing unbridled exploration, Granduciel’s gritty dedication to his craft propelled the band to new heights.
