FOR FANS OF:
The Budos Band, The Poets of Rhythm, Manu Dibango
Originally released in 1998 on Desco Records, Soul Explosion by The Daktaris is a deliberate homage to the raw, rhythmic sound of 1970s Afrobeat and deep funk. Presented as if it were a long-lost Nigerian recording, the album is actually the work of a New York-based collective that included future members of Antibalas and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. Its tracks blend tightly wound horn arrangements, driving percussion, and extended instrumental grooves, reflecting both a deep respect for Fela Kuti’s legacy and a playful reimagining of the genre’s aesthetics. Over time, Soul Explosion has gained a cult following, often cited as a key release in the late-1990s revival of vintage funk and Afrobeat.
