Building on the buzz of their debut single “Escalator” (praised by BBC’s Gilles Peterson as “a winner” and likened by Supreme Standards’ Tina Edwards to “Radiohead on a jazz trip”), Chicago collective Resavoir return with their first full-length album. The self-titled record offers a suite of elegantly orchestrated lo-fi jazz instrumentals, born from home recording experiments by producer and arranger Will Miller. Drawing equally from his background in hip-hop beat-making and formal training at Oberlin Conservatory, Miller began with sampled and looped sketches that were expanded in collaboration with the band. He then layered in contributions from over a dozen friends—including Brandee Younger, Sen Morimoto, Carter Lang, Knox Fortune, and Macie Stewart—before finalizing the arrangements. In Miller’s modest editing room, Resavoir evolved from experiment into an expansive, psychedelic soul-jazz opus, echoing the lush orchestrations of David Axelrod and Charles Stepney while channeling the sample-heavy aesthetics of Yesterday’s New Quintet, Broadcast, and Thundercat, with a minimalist, textural sensibility reminiscent of Jon Hassell and Justin Walter.
