The 1972 album Super Freak opens with a nearly side-long medley of three tracks from Curtis Mayfield's Superfly: the title track, "Pusherman," and "Freddie's Dead." This release showcases a heavy, psychedelic soul sound featuring organ and wah-wah guitars, diverging from the group's earlier Latin jazz style toward groove-oriented tracks and vibes-led ballads. The album later became a classic of the 1990s acid jazz movement, highlighted by the U.K. hip-hop group Galliano sampling its version of "Freddie's Dead" for their 1989 single "Frederick Lies Still."
