OutKast - Aquemini Vinyl 3LP

Aquemini is the third studio album by American hip-hop duo OutKast, released on September 29, 1998, via LaFace Records. The title is a portmanteau of the duo’s Zodiac signs—Aquarius (Big Boi) and Gemini (André 3000)—reflecting the album’s recurring theme of their contrasting personalities. Recorded primarily at Bobby Brown’s Bosstown Recording Studios in Atlanta, Aquemini followed 1996’s ATLiens and expanded on that album’s cosmic aesthetic by incorporating more live instrumentation. The commercial success of ATLiens gave OutKast greater creative freedom, allowing the duo to self-produce most of the record. A wide range of musicians contributed throughout the sessions, frequently moving in and out of the studio and significantly shaping the album’s sound and songwriting. Lyrically, Aquemini explores themes of human nature, addiction, and interpersonal relationships.

The album was certified platinum just two months after its release and later reached double-platinum status on July 2, 1999. It peaked at number two on both the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. Several tracks were released as singles—some in limited promotional formats—and the album received near-universal critical acclaim for its musical depth and distinctive lyricism. Aquemini was later ranked at number 500 in the book edition of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
