Just two months after recording what would become his breakout hit The Sidewinder, trumpeter Lee Morgan returned to Van Gelder Studio in February 1964 to craft his masterful follow-up, Search for the New Land. For the session, Morgan assembled a powerhouse sextet of young Blue Note talent: Herbie Hancock on piano, Grant Green on guitar, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, and the formidable rhythm section of Reggie Workman on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. The album opens with the expansive, 16-minute title track, a sweeping journey that shifts between a shimmering rubato theme and a groove-driven exploration, with each soloist stretching the composition into new terrain.
