Alhaji K. Frimpong’s 1977 Highlife masterpiece seamlessly fuses traditional Ghanaian musical forms with experimental instrumentation and bold, innovative arrangements. The Black Album expands on electronic elements and features the visionary “Hwehwe Mu Na Yi Wo Mpena,” though the true treasure lies on the B-side: the extended groove of “Adam Nana.” Sinuous guitar lines, clavinet vamps, harmonized vocal phrases, and otherworldly percussion ebb and flow over fifteen mesmerizing minutes—a Ghanaian response to the Afro-jazz experiments unfolding across the Atlantic at the same time.

Though popular in Ghana upon its release, the album was never distributed internationally, and original copies remain exceedingly rare. A limited reissue appeared in 2011, but it has long been unavailable, with even reissue copies commanding high prices on the secondhand market.
