Donuts began as a simple idea: to expand a particularly strong demo beat tape into a full-length release. What emerged became a classic of hip-hop and one of the defining works of J Dilla’s life. Completed during a year he spent largely confined to a hospital bed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Donuts took on profound significance when, just three days after its release on February 10, 2006, Dilla passed away from a rare blood disease. Initially announced in fall 2005, the concept of a “rap album without rappers” seemed at first like a novelty, but Donuts quickly transcended expectations and redefined what a hip-hop album could be. Part DJ mix and part beatmaker’s diary, its tracks start and stop abruptly, like tuning through an imaginary radio. The result is an unmistakably modern record that perfectly captures Dilla’s genius as an architect of soulful, emotionally resonant hip-hop.
