Chicago-born composer, producer, and arranger Charles Stepney is celebrated for his work with Earth, Wind & Fire, Deniece Williams, Ramsey Lewis, Rotary Connection, Minnie Riperton, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Terry Callier, and many others. Since his untimely death in 1976, his name has become a mark of quality for record collectors, while his sound has been sampled by artists such as Kanye West, A Tribe Called Quest, The Fugees, MF Doom, and Madlib. Nearly 50 years later, Step on Step arrives as Stepney’s eponymous debut album, a collection of compositional sketches he wrote, performed, and recorded in the basement of his Chicago home between the late 1960s and early 1970s. Using primitive drum machines, early Moog synthesizers, piano, vibraphone, and other instruments, these recordings capture the raw, visionary ideas of a producer whose influence continues to resonate.
