FOR FANS OF:
Weyes Blood, Julia Holter
Led by pure emotion, Cate Le Bon’s seventh album Michelangelo Dying became something entirely different from the record she thought she was making. Born from all-consuming heartache, it transforms her feelings about love into a kind of exorcism—an attempt to photograph a wound before it heals, even as it picks at it. Musically, it continues and expands the “machine with a heart” sound she developed on Reward (2019) and Pompeii (2022), as Le Bon increasingly takes control of playing and production herself. Guitars and saxophones are pushed through pedals, percussion and vocals filtered, creating an iridescent, silky sound with fleeting echoes of David Bowie, Nico, John McGeoch, and Laurie Anderson. The result is a fluid, song-cycle-like entity, each track reflecting and evolving from the last—a shard of the same broken mirror shifting with the light. As Le Bon notes, there are no revelations, no conclusions—only repetition, chaos, and the visceral experience of life, love, and humanity. Ultimately, the album is Cate meeting herself, exquisitely and profoundly alone.
