Angel Bat Dawid - The Oracle (Deluxe IA11 Edition) Vinyl LP

Angel Bat Dawid’s International Anthem debut, The Oracle, introduced her multifaceted voice to the world, and its modest cassette/digital release in January 2019 generated immediate acclaim. Within a month, Dawid was featured on magazine covers and receiving offers from international festivals, launching a remarkable period of creative output—including 2020’s LIVE double LP and Transition East EP, 2021’s Hush Harbor Mixtape Vol. 1: Doxology, and the expansive Requiem for Jazz in 2023—that continues to this day.

The Oracle blends powerful, emotive compositions with free, improvisational explorations. In true DIY fashion, Dawid recorded and mixed the album entirely on her cell phone. “Angel’s fieldnote approach affirms that the everyday remains a legitimate site of creative production,” writes South Africa–based percussionist and collaborator Asher Gamedze in the liner notes for the IA11 Edition. Gamedze—the only other musician appearing on the album—reflects on Dawid’s layered, overdubbed lo-fi symphonies of voice, wind instruments, percussion, and keyboards, calling her “a living exemplar and extension of the spacious sonic horizons opened by the AACM, refusing limitations on creative vision and dissolving the boundary between composer and improviser.”
