In January 1959, Lester Young arrived in Paris for a series of concerts at the famed Blue Note Club, performing with René Urtreger on piano, Kenny Clarke on drums, Jimmy Gourley on guitar, and Jamil Nasser on bass. On March 4, 1959, Eddie Barclay recorded what would become Young’s final studio album at Studio Barclay. Poignant and moving, the session captures the grace and genius of the tenor saxophonist, even as illness had begun to take its toll. Just days later, on March 15, Young succumbed to a heart attack at the Alvin Hotel in New York, marking the passing of the legendary musician affectionately nicknamed “Prez.”

This reissue has been remastered from the original master tapes and features Herman Leonard’s original photographs, pressed on limited 180-gram vinyl by Optimal in Germany. The package also includes a bonus 10" vinyl from March 11, 1959, recorded for the French Radio Television show Carrefour du Jazz. On this final recording of Young’s career, he is joined by Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Jimmy Gourley on guitar, Oscar Dennard on piano, Jamil Nasser on double bass, and Earl “Buster” Smith on drums, performing the iconic “D.B. Blues.” Together, these sessions serve as a moving testament to the artistry and enduring influence of one of jazz’s greatest tenor saxophonists.
