Four for Trane (1964), released on Impulse! Records, marked Archie Shepp’s first major studio statement and one of his most influential works. Co-produced by John Coltrane and recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s Englewood Cliffs studio, the album features Shepp’s bold reimaginings of four Coltrane compositions plus his own “Rufus.” With inventive arrangements by Roswell Rudd, shifting time signatures, and fearless improvisation, the quintet—Shepp, Rudd, Alan Shorter, Reggie Workman, and Charles Moffett—fuses free-jazz intensity with post-bop structure. A landmark of the 1960s new wave, Four for Trane is presented here as part of the Verve Vault series, mastered from analog tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
