King Tubby, The Aggrovators - Dubbing In The Back Yard Vinyl LP

LABEL: Pressure Sounds | FILE UNDER: Reggae
FOR FANS OF: Scientist, Augustus Pablo, Prince Jammy

In May 1982, a British film crew arrived at King Tubby’s studio in Kingston, where they were met by resident engineer Prince Jammy and producer Bunny “Striker” Lee, who brought along top artists for the cameras as part of Channel 4’s Deep Roots Music documentary. Director Howard Johnson recalled that Tubby’s was a modest setup with just one microphone, but Bunny’s energy persuaded him to film there, with Jammy ensuring smooth recording. The cameraman was Roger Deakins, later to become a renowned Hollywood cinematographer, who decided to use a moving camera to capture the lively scene of musicians, Bunny’s child, and dancers filling the studio, with Bunny himself orchestrating the energy like a circus master. Performers included Johnny Clarke, Jackie Edwards, Delroy Wilson, and Jammy’s protégé Wayne Smith, then years away from his digital breakthrough. The music reflected a shift from the late-’70s steppers style to the stripped-down one-beat sound of the early ’80s, though Bunny refused to use the Roots Radics, relying instead on musicians like Benbow Creary, Chris Meredith, Earl “Chinna” Smith, and Carlton “Santa” Davis, with Jammy’s mixing giving the tracks their heavy impact. The film captured Jammy at the controls, mixing dubs such as a fierce recut of Johnny Clarke’s None Shall Escape the Judgement, while Bunny danced exuberantly and smoke filled the room. This footage remains the most extensive visual record of King Tubby’s studio, just as its golden era was ending: Tubby had retired from mixing, Scientist had moved on, and Jammy was preparing to leave after Tubby discovered him secretly cutting dubplates for rival soundsystems. Dubbing in the Backyard, the album central to these sessions, included dubs of Delroy Wilson’s Go Away Dream tracks alongside cuts from Cornell Campbell, Jackie Edwards, and Johnny Clarke, and was issued in the UK through Starlight Music. Featuring crisp, punchy rhythms and Jammy’s tight, heavy mixes, the album still stands as a showcase of the transitional moment when Bunny Lee’s productions and King Tubby’s studio defined the sound of Jamaican dub.
