3 Feet High and Rising is the debut studio album by hip-hop trio De La Soul, released on March 3, 1989. It marked the first of three full-length collaborations with producer Prince Paul, a partnership that would represent the creative and commercial peak for both. The album was a major critical and commercial success, spawning the singles “Me, Myself and I,” “The Magic Number,” “Buddy,” and “Eye Know.” Its title is drawn from the Johnny Cash song “Five Feet High and Rising.”

Arriving during the late-1980s surge of gangsta rap, 3 Feet High and Rising stood apart with its playful, optimistic tone and inventive sampling, leading some observers to label De La Soul a “hippie” group following their declaration of the D.A.I.S.Y. Age (Da Inner Soul Y’all). Drawing from sources as varied as Hall & Oates, Steely Dan, and The Turtles, the album is widely regarded as a foundational work of alternative hip-hop and jazz rap. It has been recognized on Rolling Stone’s The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and 200 Essential Rock Records, The Source’s 100 Best Rap Albums, topped the Village Voice Pazz & Jop Critics Poll for 1989, and was later selected by the Library of Congress for inclusion in the National Recording Registry for its cultural significance.
