Roy Haynes Quartet - Out Of The Afternoon Vinyl LP album cover

Roy Haynes Quartet - Out Of The Afternoon (Impulse Acoustic Sounds Series) Vinyl LP

LABEL: Impulse | FILE UNDER: Jazz / Blues
FOR FANS OF: Roy Haynes, Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley

$38.98

Released in the summer of 1962 on Impulse! Records, Out of the Afternoon captures drummer Roy Haynes at the height of his creative powers, leading a quartet that included the singular multi-instrumentalist Roland Kirk. Haynes was already a fixture of the jazz world, having recorded with giants like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Sarah Vaughan, Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy, Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner, and Jackie McLean. Here, he delivered a hard-bop-meets-post-bop session that embodied the adventurous spirit surging through jazz in the early 1960s. Pianist Tommy Flanagan and bassist Henry Grimes rounded out the group, their interplay providing the perfect balance to Haynes’s crisp drumming and Kirk’s unrestrained inventiveness.

Though Haynes and Kirk rarely crossed paths on record, their May 1962 studio collaboration produced an exhilarating set that remains underappreciated to this day. Highlights include Haynes’s originals “Raoul” and “Snap Crackle,” the latter named after a description of his drumming style. On these tracks, Kirk astonishes with his trademark technique of playing multiple instruments simultaneously—tenor saxophone, manzello, stritch, and flute—while also incorporating unconventional sounds like nose flute and vocalized humming. Add in Grimes’s striking bowed bass solo on “Raoul” and Flanagan’s delicate, responsive touch throughout, and Out of the Afternoon emerges as a unique, daring statement. More than 60 years later, it stands as a vivid reminder of both Haynes’s boundless versatility and Kirk’s singular genius.
