Mulatu Plays Mulatu marks Mulatu Astatke’s first major studio album in over a decade, revisiting and reinventing his classic compositions in his signature Ethio-jazz style. The album blends Western jazz with traditional Ethiopian instruments—such as krar, masenqo, washint, kebero, and begena—reflecting Mulatu’s long-standing vision for Ethio-jazz. Recorded in London and Addis Ababa, it features Mulatu’s UK ensemble, Addis-based cultural musicians, and contemporary artists Carlos Niño and Kibrom Birhane, with production by Dexter Story. The album stands as both a tribute to Ethiopian musical pioneers and a fresh reinterpretation of Ethio-jazz, honoring its roots while keeping the sound vibrant and relevant.
