FOR FANS OF:
The Orb, Lee "Scratch" Perry, The Revolutionaries, Errol Brown
Recorded and mixed at Duke Reid’s legendary Treasure Isle studio by his nephew, engineer Errol Brown, Dub Expression gathers dubbed-out versions of classic rockers rhythms originally crafted for artists like Marcia Griffiths, John Holt, and Dennis Brown. Propelled by the driving drums of Lowell “Sly” Dunbar, The Revolutionaries—aptly named for their tough, radical sound—captured the turbulent spirit of Jamaica’s late ’70s political climate. Though the group’s lineup was fluid, often overlapping with other key session bands such as Joe Gibbs’ Professionals and Bunny “Striker” Lee’s Aggrovators, The Revolutionaries became best known as Channel One’s powerhouse house band.
The decision to feature The Revolutionaries as the headline act, rather than a single artist as was typical at the time, came from Kingston’s pioneering female producer Sonia Pottinger, who recognized the band’s name alone as a guaranteed draw. One listen to Dub Expression proves her right. Originally released in 1978 on Pottinger’s High Note label, the album stands as a definitive statement of dub’s purest essence—an enduring classic. Liner notes by JR Gonne.
