The looping and repetition of the Arpeggio creates an entrancing solace and constance while Sinephro dives into the endless, her synth patterns slowly unzip from each other and re-merge in continuous helixes. Yet historic record labels, from Blue Note and Impulse! to Prestige and Steeplechase, have also featured because their catalogues are musical treasure troves that could not be more relevant to Spiritual Jazz, even though they issued vast amounts of music between the late '30s and present day, that have not been confined to any one school. Spiritual Jazz 16 is a focus on Riverside and its associated sister labels. Riverside itself was founded in 1953 by Orrin Keepnews and Bill Grauer, and became an important purveyor in that decade and beyond of what would be marketed as of modern jazz. That coinage was itself an amorphous, umbrella term that essentially created a demarcation from the vocabulary of pre-war classic jazz and inter-war big band swing, thus recognizing that improvising artists were breaking new creative ground that would subsequently give rise to a flurry of sub-genres, for example bebop, hard bop, cool, modal and Latin jazz. And it's from this multiplicity of sub-genres that Jazzman chose the deepest, most vibrant selections that the vast, pan-generational catalogue of Keepnews and Grauer has to offer. Featuring James Clay, Werner-Rosengren Swedish Jazz Quartet, Sal Nistico Quintet, Frank Strozier, Cannonball Adderley Sextet, Blue Mitchell, Sonny Red, Clifford Jordan, Lee Konitz Quintet, McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, and Alice Coltrane.

Having plied his trade around the world for more than three decades, German guitarist, bandleader and musical explorer Jan Whitefield has always instilled in his craft a natural aesthetic of authenticity, a key component which has seen him amass a sizeable and varied catalogue of material which has remained timeless where some of his contemporaries have faded away. In the early '90s, as various UK bands were signed up by sizeable labels and enjoyed even mainstream chart success in the acid jazz and rare groove boom, Jan and his brother Max formed the Poets Of Rhythm, self-releasing their own uncompromisingly hard-edged take on '70s street funk on the then completely unfashionable 7" single format, forerunning the deep funk scene by almost a decade. 30 years on, in spite of a legion of retro-focused bands having followed in their wake, few have yet to come close to matching the energy and spirit of those early Poets 45s. Since then, Jan has applied himself to all manner of new incarnations and innovative side-projects, releasing further funk surveys as the Whitefield Brothers before leading his own band under the pseudonym Karl Hector, with releases on labels such as Stones Throw, Daptone, Ninja Tune, Mo'Wax, Strut and more. An avid music lover, explorer and record collector extraordinaire, Whitefield's music has effortlessly absorbed his expanding interests along the way, particularly drawing influence from Ethiopian jazz and West African funk and highlife, as well as Kraut-rock and ambient via his Rodinia alter-ego.

More recently, Whitefield has begun to venture into the astral planes of what's now commonly referred to as "spiritual jazz," and this is very much where he is manifesting on The Infinity Of Nothingness. A set of mature, delicate and meditative orchestrations, like much of Whitefield's best work the album is studiously true to its key influences -- and in this instance the twin figureheads of Sun Ra and Pharoah Sanders are particularly preeminent -- but also completely avoids falling into a trap of mere tribute or facsimile. With subtle yet diverse accents of hip hop, library and the avant garde appearing wholly unobtrusively, the album is unified by a marked trance-like feel. Pressed on premium 120-gram audiophile-quality vinyl by RTI from lacquers cut at sterling sound by Steve Fallone, presented in a retro flipback jacket. Second edition of 1,399 copies. What we said in 2016: "Slight Freedom, Jeff Parker's first ever solo record, presents the first opportunity to hear the guitarist in fully self-revealed circumstances. recorded 2013 & '14 in the Hollywood Hills as he relocated from Chicago to Los Angeles, Parker combines the dark tonal palette & percussive attack he's long been known for with real-time processing elements & field recordings, deftly crafting a unique world of solo guitar music -- multilingual, mysterious, alive with extraordinary sonic events, with a sturdy intelligence in charge & a raw homestyle vibe. parker's title composition sets the album's cavernous mood. terse lines & ricocheting loops morph into a gnarly ambient section that resembles Neil Young droning out over a vg+ copy of discreet music.

Parker creates a different sort of ambient space in his take on Frank Ocean's 'Super Rich Kids', bending the melody around a bossa nova rhythm into a moodsville tone poem. parker makes an extraordinary long-form statement out of Chad Taylor's 'Mainz', a piece he first recorded with Taylor & Chris Lopes on the album Bright Light In Winter. Twice the length of the trio recording, the multi-layered soliloquy finds parker leaping from the high rung to damn near orchestral heights, pushing his techniques & concepts to the breaking points. It's one of the great solo performances you'll hear from a musician this year. To say 'Lush Life' comes with formidable baggage is an understatement. Parker achieves instant classic status with a rendition that sounds beamed-in from a decommissioned satellite -- burned out, covered in space grit, yet still formally nuanced & beautifully reflective of Strayhorn's world-weary lyrics. twenty years into the game it's a joy for eremite to present work by an artist who's clearly taking his music to the next level." "It's not jazz, it's not ambient, it's not noise; it's something more idiosyncratic and more personal, something only Parker could have come up with. Recorded live at ETA (referencing David Foster Wallace), a bar in LA's Highland Park neighborhood with just enough space in the back for Parker, drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Anna Butterss, & alto saxophonist Josh Johnson to convene in extraordinarily depthful & exploratory music making. Gleaned for the stoniest side-length cuts from 10+ hours of vivid two-track recordings made between 2019 & 2021 by Bryce Gonzales, Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy is a darkly glowing séance of an album, brimming over with the hypnotic, the melodic, & patience & grace in its own beautiful strangeness. Room-tone, electric fields, environment, ceiling echo, live recording, Mondays, Los Angeles. Jeff Parker's first double album & first live album, Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy belongs in the lineage of such canonical live double albums recorded on the West Coast as Lee Morgan's Live at the Lighthouse, Miles Davis' In Person Friday & Saturday Night at the Blackhawk, San Francisco & Black Beauty, & John Coltrane's Live in Seattle.

While the IVtet sometimes plays standards &, including on this recording, original compositions, it is as previously stated largely a free improv group -- just not in the genre meaning of the term. The music is more free composition than free improvisation, more blending than discordant. It's tensile, yet spacious & relaxed. Clearly all four musicians have spent significant time in the planetary system known as jazz, but relationships to other musics, across many scenes & eras -- dub & Dilla, primary source psychedelia, ambient & drone -- suffuse the proceedings. Listening to playbacks Parker remarked, humorously & not, 'we sound like the Byrds' (to certain ears, the Clarence White-era Byrds, who really stretched it). A fundamental of all great ensembles, whether basketball teams or bands, is the ability of each member to move fluidly & fluently in & out of lead & supportive roles. Building on the communicative pathways they've established in Parker's -- The New Breed -- project, Parker & Johnson maintain a constant dialogue of lead & support. Their sampled & looped phrases move continuously thru the music, layered & alive, adding depth & texture & pattern, evoking birds in formation, sea creatures drifting below the photic zone. Or, the two musicians simulate those processes by entwining their terse, clear-lined playing in real-time. The stop/start flow of Bellerose, too, simulates the sampler, recalling drum parts in Parker's beat-driven projects. Mostly Bellerose's animated phraseologies deliver the inimitable instantaneous feel of live creative drumming. The range of tonal colors he conjures from his extremely vintage battery of drums & shakers -- as distinctive a sonic signature as we have in contemporary acoustic drumming -- bring almost folkloric qualities to the aesthetic currency of the IVtet's language. A wonderful revelation in this band is the playing of Anna Butterss. The strength, judiciousness & humility with which she navigates the bass position both ground & lift upward the egalitarian group sound.

As the IVtet's grooves flow & clip, loop & repeat, the ensemble elements reconfigure, a terrarium of musical cultivation growing under controlled variables, a tight experiment of harmony & intuition, deep focus & freedom. For all its varied sonic personality, Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy scans immediately & unmistakably as music coming from Jeff Parker's unique sound world. Generous in spirit, trenchant & disciplined in execution, Parker's music has an earned respect for itself & for its place in history that transmutes through the musical event into the listener. Many moods & shapes of heart & mind will find utility & hope in a music that combines the autonomy & the community we collectively long to see take hold in our world, in substance & in staying power. On the personal tip, this was always my favorite gig to hit, a lifeline of the eremite records Santa Barbara years. Mondays southbound on the 101, driving away from tasks & screens & illness, an hour later ordering a double tequila neat at the bar with the band three feet away, knowing i was in good hands, knowing it would be back around on another Monday. Land quickly moved to Los Angeles and became a key saxophone player on the West Coast scene, recording as a leader for Contemporary and Pacific Jazz Records in the sixties. Beginning with the optimism of 'Looking Up' and 'Lagoon', the former a celestial, string and harp marbled slice of positivity, the latter a spiritual journey of exuberance and hope, Finn's fingers dancing across the '70s Yamaha grand piano. It was in 1973 that he gathered a new band to combine electric music with funk, perhaps best exemplified in the pop music of Sly Stone. Hancock took over all synthesizer duties, along with Fender Rhodes and clavinet and was backed by bass and drums. The opening bars of "Watermelon Man" with Bill Summers blowing into a beer bottle, along with the band's funky grooves and new electric sounds, captured the crossover fans who had otherwise avoided buying jazz records. Head Hunters was a pivotal point in Hancock's career, bringing him into the vanguard of jazz fusion. Hancock had pushed avant-garde boundaries on his own albums and with Miles Davis, but he had never devoted himself to the groove as he did on Head Hunters. Drawing heavily from Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield and James Brown, Hancock developed deeply funky, even gritty, rhythms over which he soloed on electric synthesizers, bringing the instrument to the forefront in jazz. It had all of the sensibilities of jazz, particularly in the way it wound off into long improvisations, but its rhythms were firmly planted in funk, soul and R&B, giving it a mass appeal that made it the biggest-selling jazz album of all time (a record which was later broken). Released in 1965, the album features Coltrane's quartet at the height of their creative powers, and is a testament to the saxophonist's spiritual and musical vision. The album is divided into four parts, each representing a different aspect of Coltrane's personal journey towards spiritual enlightenment. The opening track, "Acknowledgement," is a meditative piece that features Coltrane's iconic "A Love Supreme" chant. This is followed by "Resolution," a high-energy piece that showcases Coltrane's virtuosic saxophone playing. The third track, "Pursuance," is a dynamic, fast-paced tune with intricate solos by each member of the quartet. The album concludes with "Psalm," a reflective, hymn-like piece that features Coltrane's saxophone playing in a more subdued, spiritual mode. Throughout the album, Coltrane's playing is characterized by his signature "sheets of sound" technique, in which he plays rapid, complex runs of notes that seem to cascade and flow endlessly. The quartet's interplay is also exceptional, with each member contributing to the album's overall sense of improvisational freedom and musical unity. Trane's classic quartet of Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Garrison together created one of the most thought-provoking albums of their relationship. Lyrically, the album explores themes of spirituality, redemption, and the search for meaning in a chaotic world. The music is delivered with an intensity and sincerity that is palpable, making it a deeply moving and powerful listening experience. Overall, A Love Supreme is a landmark album that showcases Coltrane's unparalleled musicianship and profound spiritual insight. Whatever the reason, almost all of his collaborations succeeded at high levels, although none of his shared sessions are more intriguing on the surface than this 1962 date with the preeminent sax star of the day. "In reality, the record amounts to 'Coltrane Plays Ellington' (plus one Coltrane original) because the tenor man is the whole show — and what a show it is. Only Coltrane could be as 'fiercely tender,' and there's no better forum for his sensitive side than the music of Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, who contributes the album's true vertex, 'My Little Brown Book.' The rhythm section alternates between Duke's and Trane's, each adding a different texture to the proceedings. Ellington is wise enough to appreciate the nature of the session, and he is quite content to feed chords in service of the young master--proving the old master's open mind and good taste. 'Trane would go to his microphone, Duke would start playing, and the rhythm section, we had to do for ourselves, you know. That's it. He didn't even tell you the key. Tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson gathers together jazz luminaries Chick Corea, Ron Carter and Billy Higgins for his 1980 recording Mirror Mirror. Henderson, who died in 2001, was one of the most important jazz musicians of the last third of the 20th century. He became an overnight sensation as a member of Horace Silvers band on the release of Silvers Song for My Father. Henderson's solo on Silvers hit composition is held up as a prime example of brilliant jazz improvisation. Another highpoint in this rather reserved musician's life was the Grammy Award Henderson received in 1991 for his album Lush Life. Henderson's playing style was influenced by, among others, John Coltrane. The connection is amply demonstrated by Henderson's ecstatic, piercing solo on his modally based composition "Joe's Bolero." On the standard "What's New," the saxophonist shows off his mellow, melodic side, a facet of Henderson's playing that always had appeal beyond the jazz community. Henderson gathered a truly all-star group for 1980's Mirror, Mirror: Chick Corea on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. This album isnt about a soloist and his sidemen: all the musicians are on equal footing; everyone has their space to play. By 1962, Coltrane’s leadership role was undeniable; he was a standard-bearer of musical commitment, and intense, bold exploration. As well, all four tunes on the album were truly ‘standards’: 32-bar tunes originally crafted for Broadway or Hollywood projects, adopted by jazz instrumentalists to interpret and explore. There’s another meaning to be gleaned from the album’s title. In 1958, when Coltrane recorded the tracks, he often favored melodies that had attained popularity during his teen years—familiar and unfamiliar alike—all in a search to find new structures and fresh inspiration. This indeed was standard Coltrane—in ’58, and well into the ’60s.” — All Music Guide

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/5320/0444/files/71cX2bYXuPL._SL1400_816e59d5-1257-4263-9513-88edecd5823f.jpg?v=1752438509
kenny-dorham-quiet-kenny-analogue-productions-prestige-stereo-series-vinyl-lp
Kenny Dorham - Quiet Kenny (Analogue Productions Prestige Stereo Series) Vinyl LP

Mastered from the original analog master tapes by mastering maestro Kevin Gray. 180-gram LP pressed at Acoustic Sounds' state-of-the-art pressing plant, Quality Record Pressings, plated by Gary Salstrom.

Quiet Kenny is yet another reminder of what a trumpet giant Kenny Dorham was. Performed by a Miles Davis-fronted European band for a movie by Louis Malle (translation: "The Lift to the Scaffold"). This reissue LP, originally recorded on December 4-5, 1957, has an elegant, romantic air to it. In the company of such French jazzmen as Pierre Michelot and tenor saxophonist Barney Wilen, this soundtrack is something of a throwback to the feel of Miles' early '50s Blue Note recordings with drummer Kenny Clarke. Rarely has Miles' open tone been more poignant, and that bittersweet quality probably owes something to Miles' ongoing affair with the film's leading lady, Jeanne Moreau.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/5320/0444/files/SR13_MilesDavis-OBI_3fcd0eb3-a0dd-4632-ad37-9c8c2922c798.jpg?v=1752438523
donald-byrd-byrd-in-paris-vinyl-lp
Donald Byrd - Byrd In Paris Vinyl LP

Limited edition 180-gram vinyl. Yet four of its five members were relatively unknown in France ... The French knew that the leader had replaced Kenny Dorham in the Jazz Messengers, that Doug Watkins was the Messengers' bassist, and that pianist Walter Davis Jr. was still only 18 when he'd played with Charlie Parker. As for Art Taylor, even if his name meant something to fans, it was still difficult for people to have a more precise idea of his musical qualities. Only Bobby Jaspar was well-known to Paris audiences, and the tour marked the return of the prodigal son, the musician who'd decided, after setting the Club St. Germain on fire, to try his luck in the States early in 1956 — J.J. Johnson had hired him, and then Miles Davis (for a short spell) before Donald Byrd brought him into the group he was taking to Europe. This new tour would climax at the Olympia theatre during one of the "Jazz Wednesdays" that were organized there, ever since the "Jazz At Carnegie Hall" tour — Zoot Sims, JJ. Johnson, Lee Konitz, Phineas Newborn — had inaugurated the series a little earlier. Byrd and his band took pains not to disappoint a Paris audience they knew to be particularly fickle, and they astutely varied the public's pleasures throughout the evening.

The complicity that united the rhythm section — Walter Davis Jr., Doug Watkins and Art Taylor — was much in evidence on "Ray's Idea"; mistrusting the traps of the spectacular at all costs, Donald Byrd, producing brilliant inventions on the trumpet, took the lion's share of the honours on a theme that was then much in fashion, "Dear Old Stockholm," adapted from a Swedish traditional song; on "Flute Blues," Bobby Jaspar proved he was still a specialist on that instrument, and "Paul's Pal" showed that, on tenor, the playing of Sonny Rollins hadn't gone unnoticed. It must be said that it didn't have much effect on the discreet lyricism underlying the choruses he played during his "St. Germain" period. The Olympia spectators weren't sparing in their applause for the five musicians. How else could they have reacted, faced with the fire the band showed during a tune like "The Blues Walk"? It wouldn't take much for us to applaud, too, even if it is 56 years later.

Recording: October 1958 in Olympia Hall, Paris

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/5320/0444/files/SR101_0804c00d-b490-47e2-968f-9cda475cdbce.jpg?v=1752438486
